GIFTED CANINES
At our November 5, 2003 general Club Meeting, Dana Gantt, and her guide dog "Amber" (now retired), presented an informative program about the selection, training and funding of guide dogs through Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. Our Club has since sponsored 3 guide dogs: K.C., Forrest, and McIntosh. Dana now has a new guide dog, also a Vizsla, named "Quint".
In September of 2005, Dana and another member of our club traveled to Southeastern's training facility. To see the pictures and view some of their experiences, follow the link on the left side of this page.
PAWS FOR INDEPENDENCE
Southeastern Guide Dogs’ mission is to offer free of charge, a unique
opportunity to achieve independent travel with safety and dignity to blind men
and women, through the use of professionally and humanely trained guide dogs.
The combination of selective breeding, conditioning, specialized training and T.L.C. makes a successful guide dog. Physically the dog must be healthy, of good working size, and easily maintained. Temperamentally a guide must show a willingness to work, be confident, tolerant, not shy or frightened in any situation, non-aggressive, adaptable to change, have initiative, and the ability to concentrate.
